The Goalkeeper’s Job

Contrary to what you may have heard, the goalkeeper’s primary job is NOT to always keep the ball out of the net. There are times when that is simply impossible. If you are in goal and Ronaldo steps up to the mark to take a PK, make no mistake about it, the ball is going in the net. As a coach, I will not assign you a job that is impossible for you to complete. However, the goalkeeper’s primary job is to save everything that is savable. The way you do that, in its simplest form, is to complete these 3 tasks:

  1. Make the correct DECISION
  2. Correctly execute the TECHNIQUE
  3. Give maximum EFFORT

If you do those 3 tasks to the best of your ability, then you, your teammates, your coaches, your parents, the fans, and everyone else will know if the shot was savable. Because if you do those 3 things and you make the save, then the shot was savable. But if you do all 3 of those things and the ball still goes in, then you have proven to the world that the shot was impossible for you to save. Because there is absolutely nothing more that you could have done to prevent it. Don’t focus on the result, but instead focus on the things that you can control and do them to the best of your ability.
